Many who are allergic to dairy products or lactose intolerant are finding themselves gravitating more toward dairy alternatives like Rice milk and Soy milk. Many grocery stores, online and off-line, have added Almond milk to their shelves. June 2018, I spotted its addition to a local Cash Saver in the Oklahoma City area. I was quite surprised yet delighted to see it for this means Almond milk is growing in popularity. Other stores I have seen Almond milk on their shelves include Aldi's, GreenAcres Market and Sprouts Farmer's Market. Almond milk comes in a variety: "original," "chocolate," "vanilla," "unsweetened," and "sweetened." You can also get Almond milk Organic.
I enjoy Almond milk. It is a favorite of mine with Rice milk as a delicious second. This milk substitute is not just delicious. It comes enriched with vitamins, provides calcium and has all the healthful properties of almonds. It is a great dairy and gluten-free substitute, especially for the coffee enthusiast who enjoys their coffee with a creamer. My favorites to use with coffee are "chocolate" and "vanilla." These Almond milk versions make great flavorful creamers. The "sweetened" Almond milk is tasty too as a creamer, might not need to add sugar for it tastes very sweet. Almond milk is primarily made from ground almonds and water. Some manufacturers add sugar to their Almond milk product. For those who are diabetic, this is something to consider before using Almond milk. There are brands of Almond milk that have a sugar-free version, aka "unsweetened," highly recommend an ingredient check before using. Almond milk is one hundred percent soy-free; completely safe for those who are allergic or sensitive to soy products. There is zero cholesterol in Almond milk, super for those having to watch their cholesterol. Almond milk is Vegan. This is a great milk substitute for those following a strict Vegan or Vegetarian diet. Almond milk has a variety of uses besides being placed on cereal, in coffee or tea, and drinking plain like one would milk from a cow. I usually make French toast with unsweetened Almond milk. It is delicious. To date, those who have tasted my French Toast have given it compliments. No one has asked me what type of milk I use for this recipe. Furthermore, I bake with unsweetened Almond milk. Anything you would normally add cow's milk to in a recipe, you can substitute with unsweetened Almond milk. I cannot tell the difference in flavor. Those who have tried my cookies and other baked desserts have enjoyed them; not mentioned anything amiss. According to the box of Almond milk I have in my refrigerator, it can be used the same as cow's milk including being able to steam it for a Latte (espresso with steamed milk). Whatever you put milk on or in, give Almond milk a try. It works well. The unsweetened Almond milk can also be used for making white gravies or creamed soups. Furthermore, Almond milk has zero lactose which is a major concern for me. I like the taste of it a little bit better than Rice milk, which is delicious, wholesome and my second go to for a milk substitute (for cooking, pouring on cereal, using as a creamer or drinking with a meal). I follow a prescribed lactose and gluten-free diet. Adhering strictly to these dietary restrictions has created a healthier me. Highly recommend before changing your diet in any way, you consult your primary healthcare provider. She or he might also wish for you to consult with a nutritionist or dietitian. When it comes to eating properly for oneself, it is best to consult qualified certified professional assistance; best to be safe, then later sorry. Many health concerns are caused by not eating correctly. Do not be afraid to experiment! Have fun being creative while using Almond milk as you try different breakfast, lunch, dinner, gravy, sauces, soups and dessert recipes. Who knows.... you might end up creating a wholesome delicious culinary masterpiece that you and your family will enjoy. Good health to you!
